Prohibited items are defined as those articles that shall never be carried in the cabin of an aircraft or taken into the security restricted area of an airport. These measures are taken to prevent an act of unlawful interference or endanger the safety of aircraft, passengers, air crew and property on board. To all passengers these items shall not be carried or do not pack the items on your carry-on or checked baggage.

Categories Of Prohibited Items
These are the categories that any passengers shall not carry on board aircraft. The following are examples of prohibited items categorized in five generic categories.

1. Blunt Instrument : any blunt object capable of being used to cause injury, for example:

  • Baseball and softball bats, billiard stick, cricket bats, hockey sticks, skateboards, clubs or batons, golf clubs.
  • Martial arts equipment e.g. knuckledusters, nunchaku, clubs.
  • Kayak and canoe paddles.

2. Explosive and flammable materials : any explosive or highly combustible substance  which pose a risk to the health of passengers and crew or the security /safety of aircraft or property, for example :

  • Gas and gas containers e.g. butane, propane, oxygen, aerosol and spray paint.
  • Flammable liquid, e.g. alcohol beverages exceeding 70% by volume, petrol/gasoline, diesel, lighter fluid, ethanol, turpentine and paint thinner.
  • Explosives and explosive device e.g. detonators and fuses, fireworks, flares in any form, smoke generating canisters or cartridges, grenades of all types, mines and other explosive military stores.
  • Additionally, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) ruled that lighters (butane, absorbed fuel, electric battery power, novelty) are not to be carry-on the person, or in the carry on and checks baggage. This ruling applies to all passengers arriving into or departing from United States of America.

3. Chemical and Toxic Substances : any chemical or toxic substances which pose a risk, for example :

  • Corrosive or bleaching substances e.g. mercury, chlorine ,Acids and alkalis e.g. spill able ‘wet’ batteries.
  • Disabling or incapacitating sprays e.g. mace, pepper spray, tear gas, fire extinguisher.
  • Poisons, infectious or biological hazardous materials e.g. infected blood, bacteria and viruses, radioactive material.

4. Firearms, Guns and Weapons : any object capable, or appearing capable, of discharging a projectile or causing injury, for example :

  • All firearms e.g. pistols, rifles, shotgun, Signal flare pistols, starter pistols, component parts of firearms.
  • Toy guns of all types e.g. air pistols, pellet guns, lighters shaped like a firearm, replica and imitation firearms.
  • Stun or shocking devices e.g. cattle prods, ballistic conducted energy weapons (taser).
  • Industrial bolt and nail guns.

5. Pointed Edged Weapons and Sharp Objects : any pointed or bladed item capable of being used to cause injury, for example :

  • Axes and hatches, ice axe.
  • Knives, both real and ceremonial knives, with blades more than 6 cm, made of metal or any other material strong enough to be used as a potential weapon e.g. meat cleavers, machete, open razor, scalpels, sabers, swords, scissors.
  • Ice skates, ski and walking/hiking poles.
  • Tradesman’s tools that have the potential to be used as a pointed or edged weapon e.g. drills and drill bit, box cutter, utility knife, all saws, screwdrivers, crowbars, hammers, pliers, wrenches/spanners.

Note: Failure to declare hazardous materials may result in civil or criminal penalties for passengers. All airlines are required to report violations to the relevant government authorities.

Please note that these items will be retrieved at the boarding gate by the local authorities and depending on local conditions, the items may not be returned to you.
