Effective February 2, 2009, Garuda Indonesia resumed its Denpasar - Hong Kong flight service following the re-opening of the Surabaya - Hong Kong route on the previous day (February 1, 2009)
Apart from keeping in line with Garuda Indonesia's network expansion program for 2009 which introduces 18 new routes, the move was made in anticipation of the rise in visitors flow, particularly from Hong Kong and China, to Bali.
Garuda Indonesia's Denpasar - Hong Kong route is served by 4 flights a week using Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) with a seat capacity for 156 passengers (12 seats in business class and 144 seats in economy class).
From Denpasar, GA-856 departs for Hong Kong at 09.50 local time and arrives at its destination at 14.35 local time. Meanwhile on the return service, GA-857 leaves Hong Kong for Surabaya at 15.35 local time and finally arriving in Denpasar at 20.20 local time.
Garuda Indonesia's inaugural flight from Denpasar to Hong Kong was symbolically launched by Garuda Indonesia's EVP Finance, Eddy Porwanto, at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, on Monday, February 2, 2009.
Eddy Porwanto, revealed that around 25 percent of passenger traffic, or more than 600.000 passengers traveling between Indonesia and Hong Kong, are mostly destined for Denpasar. With passenger flow from Hong Kong to Bali showing a promising trend, Garuda Indonesia targets a passenger load factor (PLF) of more than 75%. "Garuda also plans to increase flight frequency from Denpasar to Hong Kong from 4 to 7 times a week by the end of 2009," he disclosed further.
The head of the Bali Tourism Office, Gde Nurjaya, also explained that as a prime tourist destination, Bali's market is largely made up of leisure and MICE (meeting, incentive, conference, and exhibition). "The re-opening of the Denpasar - Hong Kong service will give tourists from China, in this case, Hong Kong, greater facility in making travel arrangements to Bali. And we acknowledge Garuda Indonesia's significant contribution in raising tourist flow into the island," Gde Nurjaya further added.
Furthermore, to offer travelers from Korea a wider choice of travel to Bali via Hong Kong, Garuda Indonesia joined with Korea Airlines, especially in drawing up a flight schedule for both airlines that would allow Garuda Indonesia to transport passengers traveling the above route.
Meanwhile, Garuda's decision to re-route its Jakarta - Shanghai - Jakarta service by introducing the Shanghai - Denpasar - Jakarta service effective from December 20, 2008, also aimed at providing greater facility to passengers traveling from Shanghai to Bali.
Previously as planned, Garuda Indonesia began operations on 4 domestic and international routes, namely:
* Singapore - Yogyakarta, as of December 16, 2008, flying 3 times a week
* Jakarta - Lampung, as of January 15, 2009, flying 7 times a week
* Jakarta - Kendari, as of January 16, 2009, flying 7 times a week
* Jakarta - Malang, as of January 16, 2009, flying 7 times a week
* Surabaya - Hong Kong, as of February 1, 2009, flying 3 times a week
Garuda Indonesia currently flies to 24 domestic and 18 international destinations. Its fleet of 56 sophisticated and modern aircraft comprises the B747-400, A330, B737NG and B737 series. The gradual arrival of Garuda Indonesia's new fleet additions expects to commence in mid 2009 with the arrival of 50 B737-800 Next Generation (NG) and 10 B777-300ERs in 2010.
