Garuda Indonesia Green Efforts

As part of our efforts to improve the quality of the environment, and in line with our vision to create a sustainable growth in the air transportation sector that is in harmony with the environment, Garuda Indonesia is committed to the Garuda Indonesia Green Efforts Program.

This program is part of Garuda Indonesia’s responsibility to create a healthy environment through real actions both in the air and on the ground. Garuda Indonesia is fully aware that business will run successfully in healthy societies. Therefore, every company has to consider the impact of its business on the environment and be responsible for finding solutions to the effects that are caused.

This commitment is pursued based on the Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Policy under direct supervision of Garuda Indonesia’s President and CEO. This policy firmly states that all employees, business partners, contractors and suppliers of Garuda Indonesia have an obligation to participate in the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management System.

These processes and systems are applied in order to maintain the continuity of environmental-based business operation in which the primary objectives are to reduce the emission and waste rate, and to save both energy and other natural resources.

This is also in line with the vision of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) mentioned at the IATA Annual General Meeting in 2007 which targeted the efficiency on fuel usage at 1.5 percent per year since 2009 until 2020, the growth of carbon rate at 0 percent in 2020 and the decrease of emission rate by 50 percent in 2050.

These targets were decided in relation to the fact that the global aviation industry contributes 2 percent of the greenhouse gas pollution in terms of man-made carbon emissions. This number is expected to increase to 3 percent by 2050, as the global aviation industry develops further.

The policy and vision is manifested in various programs which include three main aspects, i.e. aviation operations, eco-friendly office buildings, and a green lifestyle. Garuda Indonesia and other companies will also continue to promote sustainable development through the Indonesia Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBSCD).
