Also known as Kingsford Smith Airport, the Sydney’s main airport is located in the suburb of Mascot, approximately 8 km from Sydney’s City Center. Situated next to Botany Bay, the airport has three runways: the east-west, north-south, and third. As the busiest airport in Australia, Sydney Airport caters around 35 million passengers every year. In this airport, passengers go through one of the three terminals: Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 for domestic flights that’s exclusively operated by an Australian airline.
One of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, Cockatoo Island is the largest island located across the Sydney Harbour, at the junction of Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. A short ferry ride from Circular Quay, Cockatoo Island is not just fun for a day out in Sydney, but also educational as it possesses an extraordinary history worth exploring. In 1839, Cockatoo Island was built as a prison for dangerous convicts, and in WWII it became a ship yard. The island wasn’t functioned through the 1990s, before it was restored in 2001, and opened for public in 2007. The island is also listed among UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
Overnight Camp at Harbor's Edge
Your visit to Cockatoo Island will be more exciting with an overnight camp at the Harbour’s Edge or the camping grounds. A part of the island’s best attractions, the whole family can choose to have their camping more adventurous, or a bit more glamorous. Either way, you will be able to sleep under the stars with your loved ones and also make use of the available facilities such as hot showers and the camp kitchen with ten BBQs, fridges, microwaves, and hot water boilers.
Audio Tour Around the Historical Island
The best way to get acquainted with the extraordinary history of Cockatoo Island is to take an audio tour around the island. Visitors will be able to hear about the lives of the convicts that were incarcerated on most of the parts of the island, and learn about the day-to-day work of the thousands of shipwrights, engineers, and traders who made Cockatoo Island the biggest shipyard in Australia in the 20th century. With 26 audio stops on the tour, you can discover a lot more information than just looking around the objects on display, plus you can choose your own route.
