Imperial Palace

This vast complex sits on the city center of Tokyo and surrounded by streaming rivers. Inside the Imperial Palace complex is a structure called Edo Castle, which was once used as an administration central during the Shogun Tokugawa period from 1603CE to 1867CE. Still inside the complex, you can find other fascinating structures such as the Imperial Residence, The Fukiage Omiya, the Imperial Household Agency, and the Imperial Palace East Gardens. One of the tourists’ favourites is the Nijubashi. The Kokyo Seimon Ishibashi stone bridge stretches in front of the Fushimi-yagura Keep, and is one of the best photo spots here.

  1. Museum of the Imperial Collections
Inside this museum you can find more than 9,500 artworks that belong to the Emperors and their families. Designed in a quintessentially Japanese architecture, the garden outside still holds stacks of massive rocks that were used to build the palace walls. Keep in mind though that the museum limits the number of visitors at a time.

  3. Imperial Palace East Gardens
This traditionally-shaped garden is located at Chiyoda, spanning 7.41 square-kilomtres. The entrance gates still retain the old-fashioned shape, making them a contrast to the nearby modern buildings. Some of the ancient structures inside this garden are also still well maintained. If you’re planning to visit this garden, you should check the availability first as every Monday, Friday, holidays and the start of the year the garden is closed for public.
