GARUDA INDONESIA CONTINUES THE RELOCATION OF PK-GAG

Garuda Indonesia’s team of engineers are currently still working together with ATR’s technical team to evacuate Garuda’s GA7040 aircraft which unfortunately skidded off the runway after landing at Lombok Praya Airport, West Nusa Tenggara, on February 3, 2014 at 17.03 local time, after flying from Denpasar.

Garuda sent a dedicated aircraft to bring technical experts, investigators from the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee, inspectors from the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operation DGCA and other highly-skilled personnel, which arrived at Lombok Praya Airport early on Wednesday morning.

The aircraft evacuation process is being coordinated by a joint team of experts and executed with specialized salvage equipment including Air Bags or Air Balloons and also an 8-ton traction device which was specially brought from Bali by land and sea to help assist with the smooth evacuation of the aircraft.

The grassy contour and soft soil surrounding the runway has made evacuation of the aircraft by traditional means of pushback, near impossible, and has therefore forced the Garuda and ATR rescue teams to resort to alternative measures including attaching gas-filled balloons on each of the landing gears to help facilitate the lifting and removal of the aircraft from its current location.

Due to the ongoing evacuation process on Wednesday, Lombok Praya Airport was only open for operation for small aircraft between 13.00-18.00 local time. However, the evacuation process is expected to be completed by Wednesday evening and the airport should then be open to its full capacity once again.

Garuda flight GA7040 is an ATR72-600 aircraft with the registration number PK-GAG. The aircraft skidded off the runway, but safely made a stop on the grass-covered ground after landing at Lombok Praya Airport.

The aircraft had four crew members and carried 29 passengers, consisting of 28 adults and one infant. None of the passengers sustained any injuries during the entire incident and were able to disembark normally from the airplane using the passenger stairs.
