GARUDA INDONESIA AND AIRBUS SAS SIGNS PARTNERSHIP TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Garuda Indonesia is Appointed as Role Model of Green Aviation Implementation

 

Montreal, 29 September 2016 - Garuda Indonesia and Airbus SAS are pleased to announce the development of their long-term partnership by promoting the aviation environmental protection measures and operational improvement to help improving aviation safety and reducing carbon emissions.

The signing of agreement was carried out by President & CEO of Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo, together with Michel Wachenheim, Senior Advisor to Fabrice Brégier, President and CEO of Airbus, witnessed by the Minister of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia Budi Karya Sumadi, and all of Indonesian delegations for 2016 ICAO Assembly, on Tuesday (27/09) in Montreal, Canada. >The initiative is in line with one of the topics on the agenda in the 39th ICAO Assembly, which is about Environmental Protection, and is part of Garuda Indonesia’s long-standing commitment to sustainable aviation, including the development of sustainable aviation alternative fuels and renewable energy in Indonesia. >“This new collaboration between Garuda Indonesia and Airbus SAS will help to provide the opportunities to exchange ideas, information, skills and techniques, and to collaborate on problems and projects of mutual interest in relation to aircraft technologies improvement and operational improvement,” said M. Arif Wibowo.

He added, “The signing of this MOU – particularly in this good opportunity in the 39th ICAO Assembly – will be a trigger not only for Garuda Indonesia, but also for all related stakeholders in the industry to strengthen the efforts in realizing the concept of environmentally friendly aviation industry.”

The scope of cooperation of this MOU with respect to aviation environmental protection measures may be achieved by cooperation in any of the following areas:

1.          Exchange of Information

a)        Exchange information regarding updated aviation environmental protection requirements and possible measures to meet those requirement;

b)        Exchange information regarding policies, programs and projects, operational procedures, research results or publications, and the identification of common needs and possible synergies;

2.      Capacity Building

The support by Airbus on Garuda Indonesia staff training in Indonesia stakeholder within the area of aviation environmental protection (such as aircraft operational improvement, sustainable alternative fuels for aviation and market-based mechanism);

3.      Operational improvements

a)           Support implementation of Air Traffic Management (ATM) improvements including performance-based navigation (PBN) and airport management system;

b)           Support Garuda Indonesia to optimize the capabilities of its Airbus fleets (through the Airbus “Sustainable Aviation Engagement Program”);

4.      Development of sustainable alternative fuels and renewable energy. Support on trial flights using alternative aviation fuels;

5.      Any other cooperative activities mutually determined by the Participants to be beneficial.

 

Garuda Indonesia is committed and actively participates in suppressing the growth rate of gas emissions resulting from operational activities through various programs that have been implemented within the company as part of its efforts to improve the quality of the environment, and in line with its vision to create a sustainable growth in the air transportation sector that is in harmony with the environment.

These programs are part of Garuda Indonesia’s responsibility to create a healthy environment through real actions both in the air and on the ground. Garuda Indonesia is fully aware that business will run successfully in healthy societies. Therefore, every company has to consider the impact of its business on the environment and be responsible for finding solutions to the effects that are caused.

This commitment is pursued based on the Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Policy under direct supervision of Garuda Indonesia’s President and CEO. This policy firmly states that all employees, business partners, contractors and suppliers of Garuda Indonesia have an obligation to participate in the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management System.
