PRESS RELEASE
GARUDA INDONESIA ENSURES SMART LUGGAGE USAGE ADHERES TO FLIGHT SAFETY STANDARDS

Jakarta, January 18, 2024 In response to the ongoing discussions regarding baggage regulations, specifically the use of smart luggage or battery-powered suitcases during flights, we would like to clarify that the allowance for passenger baggage, including smart luggage, is refer to flight safety regulations determined based on the size, maximum weight, lithium battery capacity, and other specifications cabin baggage outlined in the policies of The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and related domestic regulations.

In accordance with this policy, cabin baggage, including smart luggage, must not exceed 7 kilograms, with dimensions limited to 56 x 36 x 23 cm (linear 115 cm), and a battery capacity of 100 Wh or less. Furthermore, the battery conditions in smart luggage that are allowed to be carried on the plane are those with removable battery specifications.

Exceeding the set standards for weight, dimensions, or battery capacity renders smart luggage ineligible for cabin carriage. Nevertheless, smart luggage with a battery capacity surpassing 100 Wh but below 160 Wh may be transported as checked baggage on condition of obtaining approval from the airline. However, smart luggage equipped with a lithium battery capacity exceeding 160 Wh is prohibited as both cabin and checked baggage.

We will continue to assess procedural measures to ensure the safety of passengers using smart luggage following applicable flight safety regulations, including the screening process during pre-flight procedures.

We are also committed to educating passengers and ensuring effective supervision aspect for passengers, supported by airport service stakeholders. These regulations are part of our ongoing efforts to uphold Garuda Indonesia's core values of prioritizing safety, security, and passenger comfort.

Furthermore, we urge passengers to report the use of smart luggage during pre-flight procedures to ensure compliance with flight safety regulations in line with our commitment to prioritize passenger safety and comfort during the flight.
